The barriers will drop down and the jockeys and their horses will bound away over a distance of 3.2 kilometres along Flemington Racecourse at 3pm.
And whilst the Melbourne Cup is referred to as 'the race that stops the nation' it is the fashions on the field that are a more pressing concern for many attending the event in person or at one of the countless events happening around town.
Manager Tracey Pisan from Kendells said it was all about 'comfort and fashion' for this years racing season.
"It's a very relaxed vibe this year, nothing over the top dressy," Mrs Pisan said.
"I'd just go casual with a bit of flair."
According to Mrs Pisan, 'no set look' had been established for the races.
"We are seeing a few different colour palettes emerge as front runners, everything from earthy tones to more vibrant colours and pastels," Mrs Pisan said.
"There really isn't a set colour palette this year it seems."

Ron Dalla owners Alexandra and Helena Strano said blue was a frontrunning colour of choice for the races, with linen a favourite material.
"Blue is a colour that suits most people so it has really emerged as the colour to wear for spring races," the sisters said.
"Although olive has been a colour that has emerged quietly as a new spring racing favourite.
"Linen is also great because you can dress it up or down."
The Griffith Exies will open up the Sporties Club as well as the main club for the event, showing the race on the big screen.
Hotel Victoria is also set to show the race, with a grazing table lunch on offer for attendees.
The Yenda Diggers Club will be offering a range of drinks specials with finger food platters from midday whilst the Coro Club will be offering lucky door prizes, a best dressed competition and even Melbourne Cup themed bingo.
Both the Northside and Southside Leagues Clubs will also be hosting Calcutta events alongside The Area Hotel and Coro Club on Sunday October 31st.
