Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to Snaith Place at 12:58am on Friday morning, where a vacant home set for demolition was blazing in the night.

The fire was extinguished just after 2am however the building was ultimately destroyed by the blaze.

But for the firefighters on scene, the most memorable part of the night was when a scaly reptile burst onto the scene.

"While they were fighting the fire I think they disturbed a big snake when some water went down a cavity on the side of the house," Griffith FRNSW captain Danielle McKay said.

"He definitely came out a bit cranky and he was slithering across the front lawn in front of the firefighters."

Ms McKay said she couldn't believe the snake was there and that it was the first time Griffith crews had come across one during a fire.

The snake eventually slithered away from the scene, but not before the firefighters snapped a picture of it in front of the home.

"We've always had thermal imaging cameras but we were actually given a brand new one just yesterday which can actually take photos," Ms McKay said.

"That's the only reason the boys could get that picture."

The fire captain said the firefighters on scene kept calm and were "more intrigued than anything" by the snake.

"In the end we stayed out of his way and he stayed out of ours."
