An online mental health workshop run by the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) is inviting community members to take part and participate in a range of activities focused on improving ones mental health literacy.

It will be delivered in partnership will locally commissioned mental health providers, community representatives, the Murrumbidgee Local Health District and scholars from universities across Australia, including UNSW's SUNNY consortium, a mental health literacy responsiveness project for the NSW Mental Health Commission.
According to the MPHN, the workshop aims to examine and finalise focus areas and develop localised activities to address mental health service and support gaps across the Murrumbidgee and is the first activity in the region that is taking place as part of the NSW Mental Health Commission's Health Literacy Initiative.

"An important part of MPHN's role is to support and empower health services and community organisations to responsively meet the needs of people experiencing mental health challenges, their families and communities," MPHN Acting CEO, Narelle Mills said.
"The mental health literacy workshop will be the first step in identifying and acting on the key areas of concern for the Murrumbidgee region in consultation with a diverse set of voices and perspectives."
Those with lived experience, mental health advocates in the field and health professionals are especially identified as benefitting from the workshop.

According to Acting MPHN Senior Manager of Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Maja Asmus, adequate mental health literacy can be used to support the mental and physical well being of participants and people they care for.
"Raising mental health literacy levels will benefit the entire community" Mrs Asmus said.
"This initiative will improve opportunities for people to access services early and empower people with lived experience of mental health issues and their carers to understand, access and choose appropriate options that will improve their overall health."
