On Saturday the 17th of July, Wellways Griffith will be providing free 'gatekeeper' training for local residents to help create suicide safer communities.

The training is funded through the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network through the Australian Governments Primary Health Networks Program.
Frances Godde, Suicide Prevention Community Development Coordinator said that a gatekeeper was someone within the community, who we come into contact and interact with on a daily basis.
"These people are likely to be approached and confided in by those experiencing distress or suicidal crisis" Mrs Godde said.

"Gatekeepers often occupy informal roles with our communities like volunteers, coaches, hairdressers and more".
Under a Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) program, Wellways hopes to equip attendees with simple yet effective means to support individuals during a mental health crisis.
The three hour course will be held at Griffith City Library and covers the following:
- How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
- How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
- The common causes of suicidal behaviour
- The warning signs of suicide
- How to get help for someone in crisis
"This free course will assist you in identifying suicide warning signs and make connections with those who are at risk" Mrs Godde said.
"These face to face trainings are evidenced based and are an excellent opportunity for services, work places and concerned community members"
