IT was a season which saw a number of great performances with bat and ball and after much consideration this was the side selected
The Area News' GDCA Team of the Year
Brendan Hicken (Hanwood)
There isn't a player who hits the ball sweeter than Hicken once he has his eye in. If you need to make a fast start to the innings he is your man. He started the season with a bang against Leagues with a quick fifty and made a couple of other strong starts throughout the season. Can also offer an option with the ball.
Dean Bennett (Coro Cougars)
The talented all-rounder overcame a slow start to become one of the Cougars most consistent performers alongside captain Haydn Pascoe. Bennett finished the season with the most fifties in the competition with five and averaged 32.75 after the Christmas break. His off-spinners also proved hard to hand with 26 wickets for the season to finish third in the wicket taking for the season.
Haydn Pascoe (Coro Cougars) - Captain
The year off did Pascoe no damage what so ever. The Cougars captain missed their entirety of the 2018/19 season after sustaining a knee injury playing hockey but he picked up where he left off in 2019/20. Pascoe finished on top of the run scoring with 598 runs at an average of 49.83. Towards the end of the season he made a return with the ball and finished the season with eight wickets.
Theo Valeri (Exies Diggers)
Took out the Player of the Year award after a narrow win over Bennett with three votes in the final round. He is dangerous with both bat and ball scoring 381 runs at an average of 42.33 before taking the ball and finishing the season with 21 wickets.
Oliver Bartter (Hanwood)
The young gun hit the ground running and was one of the most consistent performers for the Hanwood side this season as they made their return to the finals series for the first time in a number of seasons. Bartter scored three fifties in first grade this season and finished the season with 272 runs at an average of 28.89 and was rightly awarded the Spence Trophy for the best player under 17.
Tom Spry (Exies Eagles)
A great option to have with both bat and ball. Spry finished as Exies leading run scorer for the season with 283 runs at an average of 26.82 including two fifties. The veteran allrounder was also the leading wicket taker for his side with 16 wickets.
Conor Edenden (Leagues Panthers)
In a tough season for the Cougars, Edenden was one of the better performers for the Panthers. His right arm darts saw him pick up 18 wickets to be Leagues leading wicket taker while also chipping in with the bat with 123 runs.
Tim Rand (Coro Cougars) - Wicket Keeper
Rand had a solid season behind the stumps for the Cougars. He finished the season with seven catches and seven stumpings with the gloves while also making contributions with the bat in the middle order.
Jack Hutchinson (Coro Cougars)
The young leg-spinner had a great year with the ball in hand. The young spinner finished with 20 wickets which included two five-wicket hauls to see him finish fourth in the overall wicket takers for 2019/20 season.
Alex Flood (Coro Cougars)
The quick finished as the leading wicket taker for the 2019/20 season with 25 wickets at an average 14.80 with two five-wicket hauls. He is dangerous with the new ball and was a key component in the Cougars success.
Dean Wynne (Hanwood)
An economical bowler who finished as Hanwood's leading wicket taker for the season with 19 wickets. Wynne is a good option with the new ball or when the ball is getting a bit older.
