The Swans side led 2.0 (12) to 1.1.(7) at the half-time break thanks to goals from Jess Hill and Amy Burgess, but two second-half goals to CSU saw them able to come away with a narrow win in a hotly contested match.
Coach Trevor Richards was impressed by his side's performance.
"We have a lot of girls who have never played AFL at all and a couple who have played a couple of games in the Swannies comp we had before Christmas which is nowhere near as serious, and they went really well," he said.
"Coming into the game, I knew we had some good players, and I knew we would be competitive but knowing what CSU has had the last couple of years.
"They basically had a full bench with six girls sitting on the bench whereas we had none. I was really impressed with the way they went."
The biggest take away for Richards was his side's ability to communicate despite it being most of the girls first game playing with the side.
"Being our first game and because the season slots in between people playing netball and other sports it is that in-between season where you don't really have the opportunity to have a full-on preseason fitness-wise," he said.
"Considering the lack of full-on training together, the girl's talk was really good, and that is something we have been working on."
The Swans will have the second of two home games for this season when they take on North Wagga Saints on Friday and Richards is confident heading into the remainder of the season.
"We are quietly confident that we can do alright in our last three games and see what happens from there," he said.
"Ideally I probably wouldn't mind having another couple of players still. There were a couple of people who came down and watched the other night who were interested afterwards, but we will have to wait and see."
The clash between the Swans and Saints will get underway at 7.30pm on Friday.
