Griffith City Council have relaxed their rules on grave plaques in the face of overwhelming pressure from the community.

The decision was passed at a council meeting on Tuesday after residents sent in over 40 strongly-worded, caps-lock heavy submissions and a petition with 200 signatures.
The community backlash comes in response to a call-to-action by Madison Gatti, whose father's grave plaque was removed for being made of granite instead of the council-mandated brass.
However following Tuesday's amendments Miss Gatti will be able to keep her father's plaque as is, and from now on council will allow plaques to be made of granite.

Councillor Doug Curran said the changes were a long time coming, especially given how the cemetery management plan hadn't been updated in many years.
"I think all in all what we have before us is a vast improvement on what we had previously," Cr Curran said.
"Time moved on and we didn't quite keep up, but we have now."
The cemetery plan hadn't been updated since 2009, and Cr Curran said those plans would undoubtedly be revisited in the future when council builds a second cemetery on Rifle Range Road.
