Yet Chief Inspector John Wadsworth says the weekend's revelry is linked to a rise in the number of domestic violence call-outs.
General duties and highway patrol officers did 3000 random breath tests.
They issued 69 speeding tickets, caught six people using their mobiles, five people not wearing seatbelts, and 60 tickets for other offences.
"Considering the amount of random breath tests conducted, there was a minimal number of people detected driving with alcohol and drugs," he said.
"It appears message getting through especially in these pivotal periods where people are returning from holidays."
There is a link between people drinking to excess on long weekends and festive periods and unfortunately that can result in domestic violence issues with police involvement.

While behaviour on the roads was commendable, he said there was a spike in domestic violence related matters.
