Volunteers are needed to man the kiosk from 12pm until 2pm – a short stint that makes all the difference for patients, visitors and staff, looking for that lunch-time hunger fix.
With community fundraising efforts going directly back to the hospital, President Bruna Ross says being involved is extremely satisfying.
A family tradition, Ms Ross’s mother was in the board for around 35 years as treasurer, and hearing stories of the difference they made inspired Ms Ross to be a part of it.
“We have people travel from all across the MIA, and often they don’t plan eating – its just getting to the hospital and getting here safely and on time,” Ms Ross said.
“It’s very disheartening when we have to tell them they have to go down town for food.”

Major fund-raisers for the UHA are the annual spring luncheon, Easter street stall and Christmas stocking raffle.
Funds are raised at the events to provide money for equipment to be used by the patients, doctors and staff at the hospital.
Over the past, the UHA has donated and raised money for hospital equipment, a slave monitor for theater – helping surgeons manoeuvre telescopes during keyhole surgery, an ultrasound machine, a “stack machine” for keyhole surgery, are only among the very few items the group has gotten for the base hospital.
“If we get something donated by the community, or if a member of the UHA passes away, will will get some seating with plaques or put plaques on beds to remember them by – it all stays local, and it’s great to recognise their contribution,” Ms Ross said.
