This weekend Belconnen's Hannah Wallett will achieve a rare piece of AFL Canberra history, but with the rapid growth in women's footy recently such milestones will be "just the tip of the iceberg" in the years to come, says her coach. Wallett is buzzing for the Magpies' clash against Tuggeranong Valley on Saturday afternoon in what will be her 150th first-grade game. The former Giants forward was part of the AFLW's inaugural side in 2017 but she counts her achievements with Belconnen - most notably their 2020 premiership victory - as the greatest highlight of her playing career. "That was really the pinnacle. We finally won after many years of losing, beating an undefeated Queanbeyan side that had smashed us all season," Wallett said. "I'm just really proud to pull on the Belconnen Magpies jumper, and grateful that I've been able to play so many games and represent this wonderful club that supports women's footy." Magpies coach Bobby Moroney described Wallett as a "pioneer" that continues to inspire the team, setting a professional standard for younger players to follow which has helped forge the culture around the club renowned for producing AFLW-calibre talent. "I think this is just the tip of the iceberg," Moroney said. "With the amount of girls that are picking the game up, the way that the league is improving its focus on youth development, the way they're putting the women's game front and centre, down the track we'll have many more women playing 150 games. "Players here that have done it - they're the pioneers." Moroney said playing so many games in top-tier Aussie Rules competitions is more of a rarity for women due to some unique obstacles. "In the early days they were playing less rounds and that's obviously changed since," he said. "It's also well-documented the injuries that women are susceptible to in Aussie Rules, so the ability to be able to look after your body and get the most out of it for such a long period of time is actually a pretty big deal." Wallett's special occasion will be extra motivation for the second-on-the-ladder Magpies against Tuggeranong, who are still without a win. The 31-year-old is aiming to kick a bag of goals before sharing "a few celebratory drinks" with those who supported her throughout her career. "Hopefully we win and most importantly play some really good footy," Wallett said. "I never thought 150 games ago that I'd be here, having done my ACL twice too. I'm glad and hoping I can play a fair few more after this."
