With the declaration of the storms as a type-B disaster, assistance should be available for those impacted in the form of low-interest loans and freight subsidies. Financial assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
Vito Mancini, chairman of the Griffith and Riverina Citrus Growers Association, said that it was the first step of a long process.
"It's been a very busy day today... It's good to hear this response that we've been declared it, but now it's about trying to get the support that growers need."
He explained that he has been attempting to get in touch with NSW Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke MP.
Ms Cooke Federal Minister for Emergency Management Bridget McKenzie released a joint statement pledging support.
"The Australian and New South Wales governments are working closely to ensure that the individuals impacted receive the support they need to get back on their feet as quickly as possible.
"We also want to ensure that local councils are supported to restore essential public assets and keep the communities affected safe," Ms McKenzie said.
"Storm season is continuing until March so I am encouraging communities across the eight LGAs in the Riverina-Murray and the rest of the State, to be vigilant and prepared for future storms, rainfall and flooding," Ms Cooke added.
Mr Mancini isn't as sure, noting that he's been attempting to reach out and explain the extent of the damage.
"I don't know if they fully understand the extent of it. I've written an email to Ms Cooke's team to try and consult with the groups, I'm here and willing to explain it."
