Mr Mortlock started as a volunteer with NSW Fire Brigades staying for 15 years before moving to the SES after wanting a change. He served with Griffith's unit for many years before becoming the unit's commander, a role he served for 22 years before retiring last year.
Recognising his work, Mayor Doug Curran awarded him the Citizen of the Year award.
In a speech given, former mayor John Dal Broi noted especially Mr Mortlock's dedicated service during and after the 2012 floods. Mr Mortlock's local knowledge and experience proved invaluable addressing the disasters, as well as preventing future crises in building up dams and reviewing procedures.
Mr Mortlock agreed, describing it as his proudest achievement.
"I'm very honoured," he said.
"For me, I believe the East Mirrool regulator as well as the levee system out at Yoogali and the one in Hanwood were big."
IN OTHER NEWS
While he retired as commander last year, he's still excited to see the Griffith SES unit advance and grow. He encouraged all to consider joining.
"The SES has given our unit 2 new trucks, a new storm trailer, there's a boat. It's a very exciting, dynamic time," he said.
"People need to realise our community can't run without them."
He'll be taking some time going forward to relax, and promised to be concentrating on his house and family for a while as well as preparing for an eventual retirement. While he's got a lot of work to do that was set aside while he volunteered, he would do it again in a heartbeat.
"Helping your community is very fulfilling and everyone should volunteer."
