So how can you give yourself the best chance of sticking to and completing your new Years Resolutions?
Patricia Corbett of MIA Counselling says that whilst everyone makes resolutions they aspire to, people should set realistic expectations for what is achievable for them.
"You need to choose resolutions that are achievable for you, not just dreams," Mrs Corbett said.
She recommended limiting the scope of resolutions made and 'being real with yourself'.
"Getting disappointed in life is about not meeting expectations. So be real and know yourself and what your limitations are," Mrs Corbett said.
"Set goals within what is achievable for you, because when we don't meet these expectations for ourselves its not about failing but rather about overachieving."
According to Mrs Corbett, the key to succeeding was being 'consistent and persistent'.
"Set small goals for your resolutions and once they have been achieved you can move on to bigger goals," Mrs Corbett said.
"Remember its a new year, this happens every year so don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself."

Anytime Fitness Griffith Manager Marc Johnson said it was understandable why fitness resolutions were the most popular year in year out.
"People often look at their body and are perhaps not happy with choices they have made in the past which is why fitness goals are often more common resolutions that people set for themselves," Mr Johnson said.
"The most important thing however is to set yourself realistic goals, don't overdo or overwork yourself too soon and ease yourself into it."
According to Mr Johnson, there was 'no point' and 'no need' to put unnecessary pressure on yourself and your fitness journey.
"Start off slow and build up the momentum and go from there," Mr Johnson said.
"At the end of the day it doesn't matter what shape, size or weight you are, you have to be happy on the inside and coming to the gym and working out can help with that."
