The FIRST Lego League competition guides youth through a variety of hands on STEM learning experiences, engaging in research, problem solving, coding and engineering.
As part of the challenge, teams were also required to participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real world problem.
The eight students in years five and six at Goolgowi all took part, calling the experience 'very special'.
Classroom teacher Michael Bourne said that the students participated initially just for fun and 'something different'.
"The competition wasn't something they had actually competed in before, they didn't think they would win but their incredible innovation project got them across the line," Mr Bourne said.

Students collaborated on a project they called 'ship shop' which aimed at improving the lives of those living in rural and remote communities.
"They designed shipping containers that could convert to shops and supermarkets that could be transported on trains or trucks, providing produce and essential items as well as employment opportunities for those in the regions," Mr Bourne said.
"The judges loved the idea so much that they awarded our students with an engineering award."
Beth Liddicoat, a teacher involved in supporting the students through the competition was also recognised for her efforts, winning the Coaching Award.
The students will now travel to the National East Coast Championships at Macquarie University early December.
"Having this opportunity and being selected for the championships shocked and surprised the students," Mr Bourne said.
