The group organised over social media, and gathered to bring up how restrictions are impacting them and businesses across the area and the state. The protest was described as peaceful and quick, with all attendees observing social distancing and wearing face masks in accordance with current guidelines.
The protest was in line with 68 others across NSW, focusing on local council buildings and two protests at parliament house and government houses.
Deputy Commissioner for NSW Mal Lanyon commented on the protests in a press conference earlier today.
"The police are not opposed to free speech. We are opposed to activity that breaches the public health order and puts the vast majority of the community in danger," he said.
Closer to home, crime manager from the Murrumbidgee Police District Eugene Stek said that 'they made their point very quickly and left when asked to.' He added that 'the protesters were happy, council was happy.'
While the protest was moved on quickly, Mr Stek explained that police were sympathetic to concerns and frustrations from the community.
"We get that, we understand but at this point, we just can't allow people to protest in that manner ... If people can be tolerant, we understand the imposition right now but we're at the pointy end, so now is not the time to follow craziness on social media," he said.
"Now is the time to be mindful of your health, your family's health and your colleagues if you're still at work."
IN OTHER NEWS:
While across the 69 protests state-wide, police made 153 arrests and issued over 550 infringement notices, Murrumbidgee Police made no arrests and peacefully dispersed the group.
Mr Stek added that police would be looking out for other protests and would be taking action against them if they became more common.
"We need to be extra vigilant in respect to the pandemic. We're not there to crucify people but we will take action if protests do start to become the norm. Today was obviously a sign of people's frustration."
The protest comes after an extension to the lockdown, taking restrictions to September 10 or later. The Murrumbidgee Local Health District has also announced four new exposure sites earlier today.
