An exhibition into why youth leave regional Australia has been postponed indefinitely

The exhibition, titled "Finding Home" was based on Dr Candice Boyd's research into regional townships and cities and the youth exodus into major metropolitan areas. The study covered three otherwise thriving towns, including Griffith. It originally corresponded to the opening of the Pilbara Fashion Festival 2021, but has since now gone on tour.

Dr Boyd said "All three areas have really strong local economies, and there are industries that support these regions - so if there are job opportunities, why do you choose to leave?"

The exhibition included 16 separate artworks, including textiles and a collaboration between mother-daughter Aboriginal artists Lorna Dawson and Kimberley McKie.

The exhibition was scheduled to open at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery on September 3, however with the state-wide lockdown being extended until September 10 at the earliest, it has been postponed indefinitely.

When it does launch, the show will run alongside 'A Portrait of Australia,' a selection of photographs from the pages of Australian Geographic. Thematically, the two would join as a look into the lives of rural and regional Australians.

The Political Women exhibition will now run after the Youth in Regional Australia exhibition, with the postponement rippling through all upcoming shows.

'Finding Home' was originally planned to run for a month up to October 4, the length of the new season has yet to be confirmed.
