Multiple residents have already received fines for failing to wear masks, however Griffith Police said most of the community has been following the rules.

Over the course of this week officers have been regularly visiting supermarkets and other busy areas to ensure residents are wearing masks, using QR code sign ins and only leaving home for valid reasons.

The checks are being made as part of Operation Stay at Home, which was launched across NSW on Monday, following the announcement of a seven day lockdown over the weekend.

Inspector Tim Clark said the checks are to ensure compliance with the lockdown rules.

"We have been regularly conducting compliance checks on businesses and areas where the spread of COVID-19 could be taking place," Mr Clark said.

"We're also checking on people who are out and about to see what they're doing and if it's in line with the restrictions."

Inspector Clark said some fines have already been handed out to residents for not wearing face masks.

"Over the past week or so there has not been a great deal but we have had to issue fines in relation to non-compliance and that has mainly been around the wearing of face masks," he said.

"But overall I think the community across the Murrumbidgee Police District have been quite compliant with the public health orders at this point and time."

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said NSW Police would be enforcing the new rules and fines ahead of this weekend regardless of the dates on the public health order.

"Between now and then, police can stop you and seek evidence for what you are doing, and if you are doing the wrong thing, you will have those extra fines imposed," she said.

Residents can be slapped with $5000 on the spot fines for breaching self-isolation rules, lying on a permit, and lying to a contact tracer.

They can also be stung with a $3000 on the spot fine for breaching the two-person outdoor exercise rule and a $500 fine for failing to wear a mask.
