Michael Colin Coates, 22, was driving a Toyota Hilux on Rossetto Road at Beelbangera on April 1 when he was stopped by highway patrol officers for random breath and drug tests at 8.20am.
While the breath test returned a negative result, the drug test revealed methamphetamine was present in his system, with forensic lab test later confirming the finding.
He was charged for driving with illegal drugs and at Griffith Local Court on July 14, Coates plead guilty to the charge.
His solicitor Barry Bunton said his client was working and had previously completed rehabilitation, but was seeking supervision and someone who he could reach out to in case of a relapse.
"He needs to have someone to reach out to," Mr Bunton said.
He said Coates was employed and had the full support of his family who knew he was not going to be driving for a while.
Magistrate Michael Love told Coates police would continue to stop him for random breath and drug tests once his disqualification was over.
Mr Love told Coates it was "most important" that he deal with his drug issue and acknowledged that some assistance would help.
The magistrate said there was a significant need for specific deterrence for Coates and there was a significant potential for his rehabilitation.
Coates was convicted and fined $1000 and was disqualified from driving a vehicle for 12 months.
He was also placed on a supervised 12-month community corrections order.
