The patrols will fly over transmission lines and towers in helicopters to check for potential problems or fire risks.

TransGrid have assured the Riverina that while they may see helicopters flying close to transmission lines, the operation is safe and important to keep the transmission network safe for the community and staff.

"The helicopters will fly along transmission lines across The Riverina and will allow us to identify any potential issues so we can make repairs before they become a problem," Head of maintenance programs Ian Davidson said in a statement.

The inspections around the Riverina began on June 1 covering Coleambally, Darlington Point and Deniliquiin among other areas and will move to Griffith and Tumut this week.

The safety inspections will fly over more than 13,000 kilometres of infrastructure before they're completed, searching for maintenance issues or dangerously close vegetation.

The helicopter will be flying low at around 50 kilometres an hour, and TransGrid have warned that this may startle livestock. They suggest securing animals during the scheduled patrols.

"We'd like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as we carry out these critical inspections to keep everyone safe and remind the public to always exercise caution around transmission lines and towers," Mr Davidson said.
