The Art Gallery of NSW's Archibald Prize opened on May 14.

The exhibition showcases finalists from the 2020 Archibald Prize as well as the People's Choice winner and the overall winner and will leave audiences in awe of some of Australia's finest artistic talent.

Griffith gallery's administration office Margaret Andreazza said that Griffith was one of only six regional cities across all of Australia to have the honor of hosting the exhibition.

"Griffith Regional Gallery is very excited to host the 2020 Archibald Prize Touring Exhibition," Mrs Andreazza said.

"This is the third time Griffith has hosted the touring exhibition but the last time was six years ago."

It is free event although there is a donation box that attendees are encouraged to use if they would like to support the gallery.

Arist and guest Wendy Sharpe was also in attendance to discuss her portrait of Magda Szubanski, which was featured in the exhibition.

When speaking about her artwork Ms Sharpe said, "even though we know Magda predominantly as Sharon from Kath and Kim, I wanted to paint her as herself and showcase all these other different aspects to her."

According to Ms Sharpe, Magda also has an 'emergency' Sharon outfit in her closet which she donned for the portrait.

When speaking about the Archibald Prize, Ms Sharpe said it was an exhibition for all.

"Everyone can relate to the Archibald Prize because it is about people," Ms Sharpe said.

"Even for the artists, just having the opportunity to have their artwork featured in the prize is a wonderful thing, just for them to get that recognition."

For art fans wanting just a little bit more from the exhibition there will be free guided tours running on weekends at 10:30am and 1:30pm to explore the backstories to the portraits, artists, and the salacious controversies surrounding the Archibald Prize.

"There are several events associated with the exhibition which you can find online, some free events and some paid, but all need to be registered for prior" said Mrs Andreazza.

The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, June 27.
