The $12 million partnership between the Australian Government, Griffith City Council and Argyle Community Housing will see 20 affordable homes built around Dave Taylor Park in Pioneer.
The first stage of the project will commence February 2021 with the removal of the mound located within Dave Taylor Park. The 8600 tonnes of contaminated materials including asbestos within the mound will be removed and transported to the Tharbogang Waste Management Facility.
Griffith mayor John Dal Broi said council has appointed a specialist team to oversee the project.
"We have engaged appropriately qualified contractors to ensure the safe removal and disposal of the materials," said Councillor Dal Broi on Thursday.
"The mound, which has long been a concern for residents, will be removed following the January school holidays to minimise the impacts on the local children.
"We are aware there could be some air quality concerns as work commences, however we have taken steps to ensure air quality will be measured in order to ensure there will be no impact on residents surrounding Dave Taylor Park," he added.
Griffin Green has attracted concern for residents of Pioneer as council are yet to provide clear details as to whether the existing park facilities will be replaced for local children in the future.
Griffith City Council general manager Brett Stonestreet explained early November that four residences beside the park will be demolished to enable civil works to commence.
"NSW Government staff have been consulting closely with impacted residents and alternative suitable accommodation will be provided in Griffith," Mr Stonestreet said.
"Once these residents have been relocated, the houses will be demolished. This is scheduled to occur late December or January 2021.
"The Park will be fenced off for approximately 18 days while the remediation works are underway, with residents and visitors unable to access the existing playground, basketball courts and BBQ areas."
Council will confirm the details of the closure during January 2021.
