After living in Sydney and then Canberra, the opportunity to continue his training to become a General Practitioner in a regional environment drew Dr Friedman to the town.
So far, it has proved a fruitful decision.
"I've found I've received a broader training experience," Dr Friedman said. "I see patients with later presentations of disease as well as a few more unusual diseases not common in urban areas."
He said the town has welcomed him into the community and he would encourage more trainees to venture out from the big smoke and to look into rural training.
Dr Friedman is one of 60 doctors training to specialise as a GP in the Murrumbidgee area.
As part of his training, he has to spend three to four years in a variety of hospitals and community-based settings.
He is currently training at Your Health Griffith.
Georgina van de Water is the CEO of local GP training organisation, GP Synergy.
She said when registrars like Dr Friedman come out to regional communities, it's a win-win scenario.
The doctors "make a significant contribution" to the health care in local communities, and the doctors find the training a "rich and rewarding learning environment".
