Meals on Wheels Griffith, who welcomed back their senior volunteers this month, will host the heart felt special event on Thursday December 10 at the Exies Club to say a big thank you to their volunteers who made a roller coaster year possible.
In March this year, Tennille Valensisi, co-ordinator at Meals on Wheels Griffith had the heart-breaking job of having to call her volunteers over 70, who were considered 'at-risk' to COVID, to tell them they could not continue with the food charity.
"It was out of our control, we had no say in it but it was awful to have to say they were too old to volunteer," Mrs Valensisi said.
"It was just terrible because I don't think volunteering has an age limit."
It has been a tough year not only for staff but for volunteers at Meals on Wheels, especially those over 70 as the opportunity to volunteer and give back to their community was so abruptly taken away from them. However, Mrs Valensis and her team are determined to acknowledge the indispensable contribution all their volunteers make.
"This is just a way for us to thank all our volunteers for all their hard work during the year," Mrs Valensisi said.
"It's also a chance for us all to get together. It's been such a difficult year with COVID so it's nice to just get together, share lunch and have a few laughs.
"It's also a chance to welcome back our over 70's and say thank you for being patient," Mrs Valensisi said.
'Top secret' appreciation awards will also be presented on the day to celebrate volunteers that have gone 'above and beyond' during the year Mrs Valensisi said.
