Following a meeting this week, the Griffith RSL Sub-branch announced they would not hold a service in Memorial Park in Banna Avenue due to the rules around public gatherings.

Remembrance Day usually attracts hundreds of veterans and their descendants who remember their service and sacrifices of Australian servicemen and women.

The strict rules around gatherings for groups of up to 100 people make it unfeasible for the small but dedicated committee to pull off.

"Requirements such as having to fence off a secure area in the park around the Cenotaph, provide sanitation facilities, having a sign-in sheet for all attendees, and needing a temperature taking instrument as well as having 'COVID marshals' to ensure that people obeyed the 1.5 metre social distancing rule was just not practical given that the whole service normally takes only 15 minutes," sub-branch president Hank Veenhuzien said.

The sub-branch is encouraging residents to remember the nation's servicemen and women in their own way, whether it be with a minute's silence in their workplace or home on November 11.

"Our apologies to all members of the public who normally attend this service and it is our fervent hope that things will be back to normal by the time Anzac Day comes around next year," Mr Veenhuzien said.

The sub-branch is working to make sure the service and sacrifices of the city's soldiers and sailors isn't forgotten. They will be approaching the community radio station, 2MIA FM, to discuss ways to mark Remembrance Day.

Mr Veenhuzien said members of the public are welcome to place a wreath at the Cenotaph next Wednesday.
