Low water volumes and higher temperatures have led to the growth of the algae in the lake.
Bio-volume levels of 40 cubic millimetres per litre were detected by council staff on Tuesday, October 27.
The red alert warning means people should not come into direct contact with the water, or use it for washing.
Blue-green algae levels may also pose a threat to livestock and pets.
