The new sporting complex will boast five indoor basketball courts, seven all-weather netball courts, a synthetic athletics track with lighting and a new synthetic turf hockey pitch.

The project includes a new grandstand for spectators.

The felling of the trees - 15 gums and 15 pines will provide room for the expanded sporting complex. Another 39 melaleuca trees growing inside Griffith City Council's parks and gardens depot will also be removed.

Council's business, cultural and financial services director Max Turner said the removal of the trees would be an "unfortunate loss".

"This work is required to facilitate the development of the new sporting facilities at Westend Oval as all trees are infringing on building zones," Mr Turner said.

"As part of the development and landscape plan, as many of the removed trees as possible will be replaced to offset the loss of these trees," he said.
