During the past six years police have issued 23,678 speeding fines in Griffith and that has cost motorists a whopping $5,854,170.

And the reason why officers are cracking down on speeding motorists? Transport for NSW data shows that speed is a factor in around 41 per cent of fatalities on country roads.

But, motorists may just be getting the hint with the recent financial year registering the lowest number of fines for the past six years.

During 2019-20, police issued 3125 speeding fines worth $801,379, Revenue NSW data shows.

The most expensive month for motorists was in December when 445 fines were issued which boosted the state's coffers by $109,550.

While the number of speeding fines dropped during coronavirus lockdowns with less cars on the road, the tally was still in the hundreds.

In April 188 fines were issued ($48,539), in May 256 were issued ($60,610) and in June 266 were issued ($65,828).

Despite the high numbers for the recent financial year, it was actually the lowest number of fines and money paid by Griffith motorists in more than six years.

During the previous financial year, from 2018-19, police issued 3384 speeding fines worth $872,562.

The most expensive recent year for motorists was in 2016-17 when police issued 5080 fines for motorists driving too fast which cost $1,212,785.

This was an average of almost 14 speeding motorists caught on Griffith's roads every single day for a year.

The 2017-18 financial year was not too far behind with 5047 fines worth $1,193,002 issued.
