It follows the NSW Department of Education's tightening of restrictions for public schools on Monday.

In term 3, schools will not be permitted to host year 12 formals and graduation assemblies where students and their families would otherwise attend.

The regional based university, with a campus in Wagga, followed the announcement on Monday, with restrictions of its own, saying it has had to "cancel its formal August graduation ceremonies".

Up to 5000 students are expected to be eligible for graduation in August across CSU's campuses in Wagga, Albury and Port Macquarie.

Acting vice-chancellor Professor John Germov offered his "warm congratulations and best wishes" to the students.

"[W]e hope to see all our graduates in person at a future graduation ceremony," he said.

In lieu of formal graduations at the moment, graduands have been encouraged to take to social media to host a virtual celebration.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (students), Jenny Roberts, said everyone who is eligible for graduation will be sent their documents via mail.

"Unfortunately some of our students may have their completion dates postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. But this is just a delay.

"We are submitting more regular conferrals to ensure they graduate with their award as soon as possible.

"We'll be in touch with students who are eligible or may be eligible to graduate this year about ceremony options and how to RSVP to attend a future ceremony."
