Hanwood looked threatening early, however, it was the visiting Tolland side who were able to hit the front with a quick break on the counter-attack.
The Tolland side almost doubled their lead before Hanwood started to find their way back into the game with Johane Oberholzer finding the back of the net on the brink of halftime with a clinical strike into the bottom corner.
Hanwood was able to hit the front in the second half with Kandice Bertoldo making a break down the wing before picking out Oberholzer on the back post who dispatched her second of the game.
Tolland hit back soon after, but an audacious chip from 30 metres out from Alana Marando proved the difference and gave Hanwood the three points and top spot on the table.
Coach Anthony Zuccato was pleased with the way his side responded in the second half.
"The first half was very scrappy and not the way they normally play," he said.
"The second half was much more of the style we know they can play. Still a bit to do with fitness but we will get there."
There was one injury concern with Marando having to come from the field towards the end of the second half by Zuccato said it wasn't serious.
"It was just a bit of cramp," he said.
"She put in a big game today, but she will be fine.
"We have a few little niggles come out of this game, and we were out of subs at the end, so having the bye next week will be a good thing."
While Zuccato said, the girls were nervous heading into the game he feels the win will give them confidence heading into the rest of the season.
"We knew they were always going to give us a good game and it went right down to the end," he said.
"It was exactly what we needed."
After having the bye next week, the Hanwood side will hit the road to take on Cootamundra before two home games in a row.
