Aldi and Woolworths announced that they will be rolling out pexiglass screens at manned checkouts at each store in Australia in the coming weeks.
The first screens have already been rolled out at Woolworths Town Hall and Kellyville North.
Woolworths Supermarkets Managing Director Claire Peters said: "Our stores remain open and we will continue to stand by the Australian community through this health crisis.
"As our team members continue providing for the community, we will do everything necessary to uphold public health and safety in our stores.
"We know it's not always easy to maintain social distancing at our checkouts, so we've started installing plexiglass screens as an additional safeguard for our team members and customers."
In an announcement to shoppers Aldi said it would also be implementing screens at checkouts and social distancing floor markers across all stores: "Our stores now have 1.5 metre social distancing floor markers at our checkouts and security guards will enforce customer flows, such as limiting the number of shoppers in our stores.
To protect our employees, we are currently in the process of installing clear screens at each store register. We also encourage customers to use contactless payment where possible."
