Griffith City Library has teamed up with the festival to give new life to a wall in the library's fiction section, which currently hosts a graffiti-themed artwork.
Library manager Shiron Kirkman said the library planned to cover up the wall but opted to instead refresh the wall with a modern artist.
"We had been looking at painting the wall or using wall paper," Mrs Kirkman said.
"Behind the scenes we are always thinking of ways to engage with the community and public at large.
"Driving past the Banna Lane artwork, an art project seemed the perfect solution for the library."
Artists will have a 2.26 by 3.6 metre canvas on which to showcase their work, with the design brief for the wall indicating 'artists should consider the history of the site and uniqueness of the audience in developing their concept', with concepts about 'politics, religion or radical concepts' not being considered.
Banna Lane Festival manager Carrah Lymer said the creation of a new mural will be running alongside this year's festival, with applications for artists looking to take part in the main festival also in the process of being accepted.
"We are extremely proud to support this mural project," Ms Lymer said.
"It provides a unique opportunity for a local artist to revitalise that space and also have it seen by the thousands of people that frequent the library each year."

Artists looking to create the mural will need to submit an expression of interest to the festival organisers by March 12.
Members of the library will then have the chance to vote on their preferred submission, with the winning artist informed on March 27.
The successful artist will receive an artist fee of $2000 with a further provision of up to $500 for supplies for the mural.
Community members will also be able to visit the library and watch the artwork be constructed in real-time over the course of the festival, with plans for a presentation and artist talk also due to be held.
This year's Banna Lane Festival is due to be held between April 27 and May 2.
