Now, eight years after first saddling up, she has secured a National Title in the Equestrian Australian National Horse and Rider Championships.
Two riders from each state are selected to compete, and Emma Hutchinson made the elite cut for New South Wales this year.
"It was so much fun competing against the other states and seeing everyone else compete," Emma said.
"My horse was a newcomer, it was his first time competing which made it fun."
She secured the National Title for the Rider Under 12 with Gentry Park Take Note.
She also earned the Reserve Champion National Title for the Child's Large Show Hunter Pony with Spring Time Park Exclusive Footage.
Both horses came courtesy of trainer Sara Osaulenko.
"It's a huge deal because we put our blood, sweat and tears into this sport," Emma's mother Joanne explained.
"We're away a lot, travelling all over the countryside to get to such a high level."
Joanne has been supporting Emma since her first pony Pip, which was given to her at the age of three.
Since then, the duo have been to the Canberra Royal, Bathurst Royal, Sydney Royal Easter Show and the EA State Titles among many other competitions.
"This title is just so special because she rode a horse that she had only ridden a couple of times," Joanne said.
"She had to get to know him, nail the workout and hold it all together in such a big atmosphere."
Emma's efforts helped nudge New South Wales into second place at the EANHRC, losing out to Victoria by the narrowest of margins.
"A lot of hard work goes into this behind the scenes, especially preparing the horse and getting it in tip-top shape," Joanne explained.
"Emma has had such a stellar career so far, she's been doing so well at the higher levels."
