Following his announcement in June 2018 for $500,000, Deputy Premier John Barilaro returned to the centre on Friday to turn the first sod.
The work is set to see accommodation and facilities upgraded in a bid to meet the increasing demand for people with intellectual and physical disabilities right across the Riverina region.
GPSO general manager Roy Catanzariti said the accommodation would be vital, because of the large number of young people who would otherwise be forced to live in aged care facilities.
This is an incredible asset for the Riverina, making a real difference in peoples' lives and paving the way for similar disability services and care models across regional NSW.

"It is our aim to create a facility which has the potential to attract people with disabilities from around the state and indeed, from around Australia," Mr Catanzariti said.
"However the people of Griffith and surrounding areas are our priority. They badly need facilities such as this and are eagerly awaiting it's completion."
Those accommodated for short-term and long-term stays will be able to use the facilities and activities provided, including wifi and computers, a multi-sensory room, library, garden areas, tennis courts, pool, gym, kitchens, indoor soccer and many other activities.
Mr Barilaro was "thrilled" the NSW government had provided the funding to get the redevelopment underway to support "this incredibly not-for-profit all-ages facility".
"This is an incredible asset for the Riverina, making a real difference in peoples' lives and paving the way for similar disability services and care models across regional NSW.
"I also want to thank the volunteer managers and facilitators, whose vital work helps to ensure access to great lifestyle options and career opportunities for all people living in this community, no matter what their circumstance."
