The first HSC English exam threw some curveball questions that took students by surprise, including Marian Catholic College captain Teneeka Andreazza.
"It was not what I expected at all," she said.
However Miss Teneeka said she'd been well prepped for tricky questions and had come armed with an arsenal of quotes that she could cite.
"You look at a few different themes and find quotes for them and hope the theme that comes up in the exam is the one you have the most quotes for," she said.
Julian Davidge said he was terrified going into that exam hall, but when he came out he had a big, relieved grin on his face.
"It's more daunting going into it than actually sitting the exam," Mr Davidge said.
"When you're going in you're freaking out about all the what-ifs and hypotheticals, but once you're in there you're able to centre yourself and focus."

Chelsea Colpo said she was thrilled to see light at the end of the tunnel and was looking forward to the day when she could put the HSC behind her and look to the future.
"I'm excited - once we're done we're done," Miss Colpo said.
She's already been accepted into Wollongong University's media and communications degree, and once she graduates Year 12 she'll be taking a gap year to raise money for uni.
"I'm not sure what I want to do yet, so I'm hoping a gap year will help me figure that out," she said.
"I'm looking forward to becoming a working woman."
There's still a long uphill battle to go, and students have the next few weeks to cram as much knowledge into their brains as they can muster.
The rest of the HSC will take place over the course of four weeks, and the last of the exams will finally be done and dusted in November.
On November 11 the final exams for Physics, Textiles and Design, and Design and Technology will come to a close, marking a definitive end to the 2019 Higher School Certificate.
