It was the Hawks who were able to break the deadlock with Breeanna Coelli getting over the line.
The Hawks lead was short-lived with Lily-Belle Misiloi getting across after the Panthers were awarded a penalty close to the line and with a successful conversion the visitors were leading 6-4.
The Yanco-Wamoon side was able to retake the lead with Demi Leighton making an 80-metre break after a 20-metre restart, and the home side were able to take a 10-6 lead at the half time interval.
The Hawks pushed their lead out to a converted try after they were awarded a penalty from 29 metres out and Monique Higgins stepped up to slot through the two points.
The Black and Whites looked to have gotten back into the game with a try to Orianah Hughes however the play was called back for a forward pass in the lead-up.
The Panthers were able to run the same play only minutes later, but this time the pass from Misiloi to Hughes was legal, and the visitors were back to within two points after an unsuccessful conversion.
With just two minutes left in the game, Leighton was able to put the game to bed as she was able to get over the line just before being tagged by Misiloi to give the Hawks a six-point win and top spot on the table.
Hawks coach Monique Higgins was proud of the way Leighton bounced back from a tough start to the game.
"She had a cracker of a game," she said.
"She dropped her head early after making a mistake but credit to her for picking her head back up and getting back into the game."
Higgins put the game up there as their biggest win of the season thus far.
"Local derbies are always a big game but to knock off the top is probably the best," she said.
"It's what you play footy for to be at the top. It was a great effort by the girls, and we are very happy with the win."
In the other games, Yenda was able to pick up a 34-0 win over Darlington Point Coleambally.
Two tries each to Eliza Baddock and Tangi Matenga and a single try to Jodie Payne helped Yenda pick up the two points which sees them rise to fourth.
West Wyalong has moved to within two points of a finals berth after a 24-16 win over Waratahs with four games remaining in the season.
Tullibigeal Lake Cargelligo were able to keep their finals hopes alive with a 28-8 win over Hay. Madison Morris and Jade Collins scored twice for the Sharks while Luci Lugsdin scored the only points for Hay with two tries.
