I think that's nonsense. You know you're going to get chocolates in your box of chocolates, by definition.
No, life is far more unpredictable than a box of chocolates.
For example, six months ago I never could have predicted that I'd be acting in the musical Legally Blonde, but look where we are.
I auditioned for the musical at Griffith Regional Theatre in December last year, and to this day I'm not too sure why I did.
I've never danced before, and the only singing I've done has been strictly limited to the confines of the shower where my warbled screeches are mercifully drowned out by the gushing water.
And yet I must have put on a semi-decent performance, because shortly afterwards I got a call telling me I'd been picked for a role.
"Kenji, we think you're flamboyant enough to play the role of Carlos," they said.
And so I found myself sitting in the rehearsal room in January, staring at the director Andrew Bartle and his long, flowing, voluminous, luxurious, magnificent beard.
'Man, how do I grow a beard like that?' I thought to myself.
"It's going to take a lot of hard work and dedication," Andrew said.
For a moment I thought he was talking about the arcane secrets of beard-growing, but he continued talking.
"It's going to be a difficult show, but it will be worth it in the end I promise."
I spent the following months shambling gracelessly over my own feet as I struggled to learn the dance moves.
'What have I got myself into?', I thought to myself.
'I'm never going to learn these moves in time'.
Time passed, by definition.
Before I knew it June was fast approaching, and lo and behold - I'd made some marginal progress.
The show's looking great. Spectacular, even.
I can't quite believe I'll soon be starring in a musical, but you know what they say.
Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're going to get.
