It’s a punishing 10 day ordeal across 200 kilometres of gruelling Spanish countryside, but for the 75-year-old it’ll be a walk in the park.
Mrs Harrison has walked the Inca Trail, the Great Wall of China, and from one end of the English coast to the other in her quest to finish her ambitious bucket list.
“It allows you to see a different view of the country you’re walking in, and it’s a much better experience than going by tour bus and being taken around,” Mrs Harrison said.
To this day the Camino trail is a popular destination for pilgrims, who see the struggle as a path for spiritual growth.
Mrs Harrison will walk the trail to raise money for brain research, which is a cause that remains close to her heart.
She watched helplessly as her husband Baden Harrison passed away in 2015 from Multiple System Atrophy, a debilitating autoimmune disease of the brain.
“There was no cure, no treatment, and very little research being done,” she said.
Now she hopes to raise money for brain research so that other people can receive the treatment that Baden couldn’t.
The money she raises for the NeuRA Lighting the Way for Mental Health Camino Walk will go towards young Australian researchers in the mental health field.
“We all know somebody suffering from some brain disorder, whether it be Parkinsons, dementia, MS, motor neurone disease,” she said.
“Many of us will be affected in our lifetimes, so I think that it’s a very worthy cause.”
She’s already raised over $3500 and she hopes to reach her goal of $7000 by May 1, when she takes the first step on her 10 day trek.
She hasn’t been going on her daily walks lately because of the searing heat, but once the weather cools down she will be hitting the pavement to train her thighs for her upcoming adventure.
