Scott William Lyons was seen in full view on CCTV footage stealing ‘Joop Homme Eau De Toilette’ from Chemist Warehouse on September 20.
Mr Lyons picked up a box from the counter before taking the perfume bottle out, pocketing it, and then discarding the empty box on another shelf in an attempt to hide it.
Staff found the box the next day and called police after examining the CCTV footage.
Police captured him more than one month later at the scene of an accident, where a car had rolled onto its roof and was blocking two lanes of traffic.
The four occupants of the car, one being Mr Lyons, were waiting near the crash site for emergency services to arrive.
Goulburn highway patrol officers saw Mr Lyons had a warrant out for stealing, and when they questioned him he made a “full and frank” confession.
“I don’t know why I did it, I had the money in my pocket,” Mr Lyons confessed.
When sentencing Mr Lyons, Magistrate Joy Boulos said while the perfume itself was only valued at $59, every time someone committed a shoplifting offence it came at a high cost to the community and taxpayer money.
“You need to be stopped from offending this way,” Magistrate Boulos said.
“It’s simply not on.”
Mr Lyons’ imprisonment was backdated to December 23 and he will be eligible for release on June 22, 2019.
