Sturt Highway Galore crash victims still critical as Riverina Police continue Operation Safe Arrival

A man and a woman have been taken to hospital in a critical condition after their vehicle flipped on the Sturt Highway near Galore on Saturday morning.

The incident came as Riverina police detected a “disappointing” number of drink drivers as part of ‘Operation Safe Arrival'.

Riverina Sergeant Barry Roberts said police caught four drivers above the alcohol limit in two days out of 1500 tests and no drivers under the influence of drugs.

Police issued six driving infringement notices during the same time.

“It’s disappointing but it's better than what we would have expected for this time of year,” Sgt Roberts said.

Both people from the Galore incident remained in hospital in intensive care as of Sunday.  

Upon arrival the 19-year-old female was found to be in cardiac arrest, but she was revived by paramedics on site.

She was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for further assessment, but was expected to be flown to Canberra 

The 23-year-old man was conveyed from the scene to Canberra Hospital.

Sgt Roberts said an investigation into the crash was ongoing and was yet to determine a possible cause abut police were warning all drivers to be aware of fatigue.

“Fatigue is a major factor in road crashes, especially around Christmas when people are driving longer distances and on unfamiliar roads,” he said.
