The grant of $79,923 comes through an application to the government’s Clubgrants category three infrastructure grants program.
Captain Darrell Wallace said the brigade was thrilled to receive the funding which will enable them to create additional training space, extra changing rooms and truck bays to house fire trucks at the station off Oakes Road.
“The extra space in our station will mean we can have more members and ensure we have the best possible response to all emergencies,” Captain Wallace said.
“We have three of our own trucks, we also regularly house a community engagement trailer and two communication units (outside).
“If they are inside it makes it easier for us to get in and get out the door to emergencies, when they are in a shed the keys are all there the trucks are ready to go and are plugged in to the triple chargers.
“With structure fires they say you have seven minutes from the time its starts to the time it fully engulfs (a structure),” Captain Wallace said.
According to Captain Wallace, approximately 15 people have joined the Hanwood Brigade in the last year.
This includes five people aged 12 to 16 years who joined the junior brigade which was started in September 2017.
“Having more space to get our gear on and get out the door will make a big difference.”
“Having storage space for things like our fire fighting foam will allow us to access that really quickly as well,” Captain Wallace said.
