“I’ve been walking up and down the high street looking around and saying thank you to everyone,” Ms Bevan said.
“I’m just so grateful that people are raising funds for breast cancer and showing support for local families.”
Ms Bevan started the McGrath Foundation in 2005 with her friend Jane McGrath, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31 and passed away in 2008.
“I wish she could be here to see this - I can only imagine how proud she’d be to see the support Australia has given the McGrath Foundation,” she said.
The money raised through Pink Up Griffith goes towards hiring breast cancer nurses such as Fiona Shields, who is the only breast cancer nurse in the MIA. Ms Shields is based in Griffith three days per week, but she also supports families in surrounding towns such as Leeton, Hay, Hillston and Lake Cargelligo.
“We know that Fiona has a huge impact on the community,” Ms Bevan said.
“She brings support not just to the patient but to the whole family. Doctors and oncologists can support the disease, but it’s breast care nurses like her who can support the families in their time of need.”
Ms Bevan said she was encouraged by her visit to Griffith, and that she hoped to keep raising money for the 80 communities that don’t have a breast cancer nurse.
