Anyone with an unregistered firearm or firearm-related item in their possession will have the opportunity to legally dispose, or register it without penalty until Sunday.
The initiative was launched following the success of last year’s national campaign, which netted more than 25,000 firearms and firearm-related parts for destruction, sale and registration across NSW.
A NSW Police spokesperson said “there have been 4244 firearms handed in for registration, sale or destruction across NSW” as of September 27 this year.
They include more than 701 rifles, 52 handguns, 26 revolvers, 226 shotguns, 332 firearm parts, one silencer, a replica Colt AR-15 Machine Gun, a .40 calibre flintlock pistol and a RW.45 US army–issued pistol surrendered to police for destruction.
Final statistics for the Riverina will be provided after the amnesty finishes.
Firearms and firearm-related items can be surrendered under amnesty arrangements at approved drop-off points, which include licensed firearm dealers and the region’s police stations.
Under no circumstances should loaded firearms be taken into public places – including police stations.
Police are also reminding firearm licence holders of their legal responsibility to ensure that their registered firearms are stored safely and in accordance with legislation.
Anyone with information about firearms crime should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
