He was a red P-plater.
The region’s highway patrol cops busted the speeding driver along Kidman Way, near Darlington Point at about 10am on Sunday.
The radar detected him driving almost 70km/h above the signposted speed limit, but almost 80km/h above the legal limit for P1 licence holders.
According to police, the driver said he had not been paying attention to the speedometer.
“No mate, I wasn’t even watching it,” the driver allegedly said in response to police questioning.
“It’s not my car.”
When the man was asked to produce his licence, police allege he said: “I don’t have me licence on me.”
A check through the Roads and Maritime Services system revealed the man should have been displaying red P-plates, instead of the green that were on the car.
Highway patrol fined the man for driving more than 45km/h above 90km/h, for not carrying a licence, not displaying P-plates and failing to record a change of address within the required 14 days.
The driver was issued with a notice of suspension and his licence was revoked.
The number plates of the vehicle were not seized, as the driver was not its owner.
