Cancer Council, Griffith Prostate Cancer Support Group and Griffith Rotary Club have joined forces for a special information session on prostate cancer.
Support group’s Barry Maples is a cancer survivor himself. He feels men need to change up the conversation around health.
“Men feel they’re untouchable and they can’t get prostate cancer. The numbers say yes you can,” he said.

“Here and the Hunter Valley are among the highest levels of prostate cancer in the state.”
To try and break down the stigma, Mr Maples and others attend a support group, meeting on the third Thursday of every month, 7pm at Griffith Southside Leagues Club.
“It’s a place where people can come and share, or they can come and listen to others who are maybe going through a similar experience.”
He said a basic health check can made a huge difference.
“Men don’t go to the doctor and ask for the basic blood test. By the time it’s found it can be too late,” he said.
“Our basic aim is to get men to have their tests regularly. It doesn’t only affect men, but their families too.”
The information evening will take place on Tuesday, September 18 at Griffith Exies, kicking off at 7:30pm.
