The crash between a B-double truck and Mitsubishi Magna claimed the lives of the sedan driver and one passenger – both were female and 24 years old.
A male passenger, 25, was airlifted to Canberra Hospital while another female passenger, 25, was taken to Griffith Base Hospital.
The driver of the truck, a 46-year-old man, was taken to Wagga Base Hospital to undergo mandatory testing.
The Magna was travelling on Burley Griffin Way and the truck, an Argosy Prime Mover, was on the Newell Highway when the accident occurred at about 11.30am.
“The Crash Investigation Unit is still taking statements about the accident,” Riverina Police District’s Inspector Rob Vergano said.
“The male passenger airlifted to Canberra is now in stable conditions.”
Inspector Vergano advised motorists to take adequate rest periods when using highways.
“As well, avoid using distracting devices, such as mobile phones, and abide by the road rules,” he said.
There were reports of a secondary accident following traffic diversions; however, Inspector Vergano and a NSW Police spokesperson said they did not have details of it.
Traffic diversions were lifted at around 10pm on Wednesday.
