According to Meat and Livestock Australia’s National Livestock Reporting Service there were 2000 new season lambs offered and price trends were mixed.
Trade lambs were in short supply, with most lambs weighing above 24kg cwt. Restockers were present but they didn’t influence the market, while there was unpredictable demand for light lambs from processors.
The trade market sold to variable demand, which was a reflection of the plainer quality across light and medium classes. Heavy trade lambs sold $7/head cheaper, averaging 842c/kg cwt.
The heavy and extra heavy lambs were in high demand, as domestic buyers were competitively trying to secure a market share, averaging 896c/kg cwt. Lambs weighing 26-30kg sold to a top price of $274/head, while lambs above 30kg remained unchanged to average 829c/kg cwt. Merino lambs made from $138 to $215/head. It was a mixed quality offering of mutton, with all weights and grades represented.
All buyers operated in a cheaper market. Heavy sheep decreased $26/head to average 425c/kg cwt. Trade sheep were well supplied, making from $79 to $128/head, averaging 445c/kg cwt. Light sheep made from $70 to $106/head.
