While it was a small fire and no property was damaged, every year the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is called to hundreds of roadside fires believed to be caused by discarded butts.
The penalty for discarding a lit cigarette is $660. If it's day of total fire ban, the fine is doubled to $1320.
Court action may be taken.
If you see a vehicle where a lit cigarette butt has been improperly disposed, you can report the vehicle to the NSW RFS simply by filling out the details here.
Alternatively you can call 1800 679 737 and leave a message and an officer will make contact.
