These days the duo spend their weekends hanging out, going on adventures and spending quality time – a far cry from the hospital room Mia Richards found herself in three years ago.
“I’m just happy she’s been able to make it through again, after everything she’s been through. It was really difficult and sad to see her in the hospital room,” Chloe said.
In the weeks, months and years following the accident Ms Richards had to learn to eat, walk and talk again. When she first saw Chloe in recovery, there was a moment she struggled to recognise her.
“It was a bit heartbreaking,” Chloe recalled.

Thankfully, those days are behind them. Chloe says in the years since, she’s been amazed at her mother’s strength and resilience.
“She puts everything aside just to take care of my siblings and I. She’d just do anything for us,” she said.
“I just thought she deserved to be recognised because she does so much for my siblings and I. She does whatever she can to put food on the table for us or to give me experiences I might not have had if I didn’t have her.”
Wanting to show the world how great her mother was, Chloe contacted The Area News in the hope of thanking her mother for all she had done.
“I just wanted to tell everyone how great she is. I really think I have one of the best Mums ever.”
The two of them have also enjoyed trips overseas to India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Ms Richards says she tries to make every moment with her children count.
“It’s about making sure you treasure every moment,” she said.
Their bond makes clear the pair are equally proud of how far each other has come, especially in light of a tough few years.
“I’m very proud of her. She’s so clever. She’s grown up a lot since the accident and these days she helps out wherever she can,” Ms Richards said.
