The Weethalle silo mural – which features a shearer holding a merino sheep while a farmer surveys his golden crop of ripened wheat with a combine harvester working in the background – was chosen as part of Australia Post’s collector’s edition release, celebrating four of Australia’s most iconic pieces of silo art alongside Brim in Victoria, Ravensthorpe in Western Australia and Thallon in Queensland.
The stamps will be launched at the Weethalle silos at 10am on Monday, May 21.
The mural was commissioned by Bland Shire Council in consultation with silo owners and project partners Paul and Jenny Northey and painted by Melbourne artist Heesco Khosnaran.
It was officially opened in July last year and was the first silo to be painted in NSW.
Huge crowds turned out for the opening, which has since led to the small town being put on the map.
Since the opening, the silos had attracted tens of thousands of visitors and been viewed by more than one million people online.
They will now reach an even wider audience through the stamp release.
Comments about the silo art continue to be positive, with calls for similar work to be done in areas like Griffith and Leeton to improve the look of these areas.
