Inspector Rob Vergano from Riverina police said it was a “freak accident” and said the community was reeling from the tragic circumstances.
“About 2.15pm on Sunday a seven-year-old boy was struck by a reversing vehicle and unfortunately received fatal injuries as a result of being struck,” Inspector Vergano said.
“Police, ambulance and other emergency services attempted to resuscitate the young boy however they were unable to. The scene was attended by the forensic services group and the vehicle has been seized for a mechanical examination.”
The 35-year-old male driver, the boy’s father, was taken to Temora hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing and police will interview him about the incident.
“Police are obtaining witness statements and will prepare a report for the coroner,” Inspector Vergano said. “These are extremely sad, tragic circumstances and the small community is definitely in mourning today. There will be further statements in the coming days.”
